Marc Jacobs Honey Eau de Parfum

Marc Jacobs Honey EdPSometimes that which is buzzed about turns out to be worth the attention, but not always. Marc Jacobs Honey is a fresh floral-fruity fragrance suitable for summer months. Recently it has been advertised everywhere, but its smell is nothing special. It smells like any yearly floral-fruity spring/summer offering with a noticeable dose of honey, which permeates the composition in a somewhat obtrusive way. Mandarin orange and pear open the fragrance on citrus and fruity notes, with the former extended and florafied in the midnotes by orange blossom. Honeysuckle builds on the white floral vibe. Peach adds to the honey facet to make the sweetness fresh.

Despite the theoretically delicious pairing of white flowers and honey, Honey smells a touch synthetic. The fragrance has a decent longevity of 4-5 hours and a sillage similar to any eau de toilette (radiating about an arm’s length and leaving a light trail), but its projection and (unnatural,) bright, bubbly character quickly fade.

Unfortunately, there is not enough to set this fragrance apart from the competition.

Creed Acqua Fiorentina Millesime

Creed Acqua Fiorentina MillesimeI was very excited to try Creed’s fragrances because they are known for their refinement. Acqua Fiorentina has been described as “a breath of fresh air” and “a copy of Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue“.

Acqua Fiorentina is a citrus, fruity, refreshing summer scent. It opens with plum, apple, and a large dose of bergamot. A hint of pear and lemon follow through and connect with cedar in the base, along with grapefruit. It smells of an evening by the sea and a margarita, with hints of flowers from far away wafting in the breeze. It lasts about 5 hours, has a noticeable trail and radiates within personal distance.

There are definitely some similarities between Light Blue and Acqua Fiorentina, they do have apple, cedar, lemon, and rose in common, and they are both considered floral-fruity and citrus. However, Light Blue is more woody and lemony, whereas Acqua Fiorentina is more fruity and salty. Chances are, that a person who likes Light Blue will like Acqua Fiorentina and the other way around. I find Acqua Fiorentina to be the more feminine and refined of the two.

Tory Burch Eau de Parfum

Tory Burch EdPI didn’t have very high hopes for Tory Burch EdP. From what I have heard of it before sampling, it was a likeable fragrance, but without a spark. After sampling, however, I cannot see why it is underappreciated.

To me, Tory Burch’s EdP smells like citrus + white flowers, which I generally enjoy. It is very much an orange-centred scent, with neroli and mandarin orange opening in the topnotes. In the midnotes, I smell an edible mix of mimosa, jasmine, and tuberose. The base is a definite musk – a common and safe choice for major market releases. Overall, it smells like a white cream cake with a sweet orange filling. I wouldn’t name this a fresh fragrance (although it is by no means heavy), but my boyfriend did smell green in it, which he liked a lot.

Perhaps more was expected of Tory Burch’s first fragrance. It is not a masterpiece, but I think it is a worthy summer scent and not at all boring.

Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Cologne Absolue

Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Cologne AbsolueThere is so much buzz going on about Atelier Cologne! I appreciate the uniqueness, structure, and puritanism of the scents, but I can see a lot of them more as candles or room sprays rather than fine perfume. Additionally and unfortunately for me, many masculine notes in a fragrance amplify on my skin. This does make them genderless and work-appropriate, but personally, I enjoy more the decidedly feminine compositions.

Orange Sanguine is one of those unisex scents that turns too masculine on me for my liking. In the vial (sample), it smells strongly of orange, and the sandalwood underneath transforms into an interesting tea note. On my skin, however, it is linearly a bitter orange scent. No jasmine or geranium to contribute to the lady side of the unisex formula.

Orange Sanguine smells promising and nuanced in the bottle, but on me it turned into the bitter juice of orange peels, concentrated. Perhaps some of the other Atelier Colognes will be more suitable for my chemistry.

Carven Le Parfum Eau de Parfum

Carven Le Parfum EdPI had yet to try a Carven perfume before I tried this one. Carven is an old house best known for its classic, Ma Griffe. Unlike many other houses, it does not release new fragrances often, so an introduction to the market from it instantly caught my eye. After reading several reviews, the general opinion seemed that Le Parfum was not a worthy offering. I was very hesitant to try it, but a sample did come into my possession. I am happy to report that I disagree with some other reviewers on the quality and/or artistry of Le Parfum.

When I smelled the cap of my mini, I instantly thought of pineapple, sunshine, the colour yellow-orange, and of late spring. Apricot and mandarin blossom open with a fruity burst, toned only very slightly down by white hyacinth. Sweet pea is the dominant note in Le Parfum, weaving it’s way between all of the others and flirting with its light, floral sweetness. Ylang-ylang lends a hint of tropical charm. On me, I smell neither patchouli, nor sandalwood. Instead, osmathus in the drydown retains the scent’s fruity-floral character. In fact, I think this fragrance can easily fit in the category of fruity-florals, especially with the sophisticated lot.

Carven Le Parfum is a bright white floral, which may be a touch too heady for the summer, depending on temperature. Worn in spring, I feel like I am ushering in the flowers and warmth. To me, it is a happy fragrance and a pick-me-up for all year. I enjoy it. On me, it lasts about 8 hours and has a soft sillage. Its only down side is that it gets boring quickly.
